Hello! I’m Jim.
I've worked in film festivals and programming for over twenty years. They can be daunting, so I demystify them for filmmakers and help them dip a toe in their murky waters and put their best foot forward. I also curate films, mentor, and sometimes I write. It's nice to meet you.
My Approach
After almost two decades in the film industry, it’s clear that there are still many misconceptions and inaccuracies around festivals and how they work. More importantly, how they can work for YOU, the filmmaker. What are festival looking for? Do you need to know someone on the inside? What’s the deal with waivers? It’s confusing, and it’s a minefield.
Think of me as your own personal festival AMA. You can hire me for a “brain-picking” session or we can get more in depth with a rough cut review, script coverage, or one-on-one festival consultation. Ever wondered what you should wear to a premiere? I have thoughts on that too.
If any of this resonates with you, get in touch! I’m ready to help.
Testimonials
Jim has an amazing ability to translate the complexities of the film industry and the festival world into simple, straightforward language. He understands the challenges artists face, and the realities of the business, and makes navigating them both feel much less mysterious and much more achievable.
-Brent Bishop, filmmaker
We met Jim at TIFF right after finishing our independent feature, it was ideal timing.
Jim is easy to talk to, passionate about his work and we knew immediately we wanted to learn more from him before diving into festival submissions. He’s honest, transparent, and really knows the ins and outs. He made the whole process feel way less overwhelming, and in a big way thanks to his guidance, we landed our dream festival premiere!
We can’t recommend Jim enough if you’re navigating the festival circuit.
-Melani Wood, Producer, "The Snake"
The festival landscape is always changing, which makes Jim’s veteran, practical advice invaluable. He's also just very fun to talk movies with!
It’s rare for a programmer as experienced as Jim to offer his wisdom in a constantly shifting festival landscape. He doesn't just talk general strategy, he brings a sharp eye to your actual film and gives you honest, practical advice on the best paths forward.

My approach is festival agnostic and the tools I can give you will be applicable to almost any festival on your wish list. But ultimately, it’s your film and your planning that will get your film into festivals.
